Importation by Individuals of Medicinal Products for Personal Use
Regulations and rules concerning medicinal products for personal use, in luggage and by post to Iceland
Criteria for import of medicinal products for personal use, if permitted
The medicinal products must have been obtained by lawful means for human use.
The person must be able to present a certificate, a prescription or another written statement along with instructions for use, which proves beyond doubt that the medicinal products have been obtained by lawful means and that they are essential in the stated amounts.
Trade by post/internet of medicinal products is unlawful
I. Import from EEA states
The members of the European Economic Area are the 27 EU member states (Austria, Belgium, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary and Germany) and three EFTA states (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein)
Import by post from EEA States
Medicinal products can be imported by post for personal use in an amount corresponding to a maximum of 100-days use with the following conditions:
Individuals can import by post in amount corresponding to a maximum of 30-days use medicinal products classified as anabolic steroid hormones and their analogues or growth hormones and their analogues, according to a list of medicinal products prohibited in sports. Customs authorities can request proof of the need for the stated amount, e.g. by a doctor’s certificate or a prescription.
Import of narcotic medicinal products is prohibited.
Import of medicinal products in a luggage
Medicinal products can be imported in luggage for personal use in an amount corresponding to a maximum of 100-days use, with the following conditions:
Medicinal products classified as narcotic and addictive in amount corresponding to a maximum of 30-days use, if the person is living inside the Schengen area, with regulated restrictions.
Medicinal products classified as narcotic and addictive in amount corresponding to a maximum of 14-days use, if the person is living outside the Schengen area, with regulated restrictions.
Individuals can import in luggage in amount corresponding to a maximum of 30-days use medicinal products classified as anabolic steroid hormones and their analogues or growth hormones and their analogues, according to a list of medicinal products prohibited in sports. Customs authorities can request proof of the need fro the stated amount, e.g. by a doctor’s certificate or a prescription.
The Schengen states are: Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
II. Import from non-EEA states
Import by post from non-EEA States
Medicinal products cannot be imported by post for personal use from non-EEA states.
In special cases IMCA can grant an exemption from this general rule upon specific conditions.
Import of medicinal products in a luggage
Medicinal products can be imported in luggage for personal use in an amount corresponding to a maximum of 100-days use, with the following conditions:
Medicinal products under regulatory surveillance, i.e. narcotics and addictive medicinal products or anabolic steroid hormones and their analogues or growth hormones and their analogues cannot be imported in luggage.
